When I was 15, I received an unforgettable piece of advice from my Dad.
I was about to go to dinner at a friend’s house when he pulled me aside and said:
“Always leave things better than how you found them”
He went into more detail by telling me it was not only focused on places I visited, but also on people. This resonated deeply with me, reminding me of the saying that people will remember how you make them feel, not just what you say.
That day, my whole perspective changed.
This has helped me tremendously on how to approach the opportunities that we are giving. For example:
When being invited to other people’s houses, the simple act of helping with the table or helping with the dishes show the appreciation of the hospitality.
When being in a conversation with someone that is not having a great day, how can I find something that they are doing well and try to shed some light on some of the things they are doing well.
During my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work in different locations globally and my mission has always been how can I make that community better, how can I inspire younger generations through Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, making the location as prosperous as possible for the future.
Thanks Dad, and hope this advice helps others too!
